Quick pick of a home cherry tree

We are eagerly awaiting the opening of our neighborhood cherry orchards (though it looks like they will open while we are on our anniversary mini-vacation, so we will not get first pick!) In the meantime we quickly picked a bowl from one of our sad, old (“vintage”), un-sprayed cherry trees before the birds could get them. It is amazing how they will wait until just the right amount of ripeness and then literally strip a tree in hours. If you want cherries, you have to spray!

These are most likely a variety of pie cherries, though not so tart that we can’t enjoy them fresh. So these get washed and popped in the fridge for snacking, and I will get to work making a pie out of some of our previously pitted and frozen fruit. Then when we are back next week we will be ready to pick some more from the local pros if they are still available.
